Letter to the Age today, 25th July
Watch out for grandmas
Last Thursday, 13 members of Kooyong branch of Grandmothers Against the Detention of Refugee Children set up 12 chairs bearing the names of the 12 asylum seekers who have died in detention. We were outside Josh Frydenberg's electoral office. We held a vigil, passing out leaflets to passers-by.
Very quickly we were joined by seven police officers, three of whom stayed with us for the duration of our one-hour vigil. The officers probably had more important things to attend to, but no doubt others will be relieved to hear that the Kooyong area is being kept safe from grandmothers.
